About Us

The Dorchester County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs develops, coordinates and operates services and programs for persons with intellectual disabilities, autism and head and spinal cord injuries in Dorchester County. The Dorchester County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs is a non-profit quasi-governmental agency governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Governor of South Carolina upon recommendation of Dorchester County Council.


Our mission is to empower persons with intellectual disabilities and related disabilties in Dorchester County to make choices that will promote and enhance their inclusion in community life, by providing individually tailored, flexible support.


Our services include:
Early Intervention
– for children from birth to 5 years old
Family Support Services – for individuals ages 5 through adulthood
Adult Development Services – for adults ages 18 and up
Residential Services – for adults ages 18 and up


Eligibility and application for services is handled through the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs.

Our main office is located at 2717 West 5th North Street (Highway 78), Summerville, SC 29483, approximately ¾ mile from the intersection of Highway 78 and Jedburg Road.
